New fixtures need a vent, and getting one up through a finished house can be the tricky part. Some cities allow air admittance valves and some don't.
Before you plan
Find out where the sewer line leaves the house. That decides whether the new bathroom can drain on its own or needs a pump. Low ceilings, ducts and beams can limit where things go. Photos of the space are a good place to start.

An ejector pit means opening the floor, but then the bathroom works like any other. An upflush is simpler to install. It depends on your space and budget.
Does a basement bathroom need a window?
Usually not. It does need a fan that vents outside. Check your city's code to be sure.
How do I know if my basement is ready for a bathroom?
Look for a capped pipe in the floor. That usually means the builder planned for one. If there isn't one, it can still be done.
